This is a painting I did of my Grandma Helma’s first home in America. Helma came from Finland to Ellis Island when she was 11. (we found her name there during a New York visit several years ago) Her parents could afford 1 ticket. She was the most adaptable of their 5 children so she was chosen for this adventure. She fell in love with and married Worthy Glover, had 5 children of her own and lived here for 56 years before her death. I remember her kitchen, the smell of fresh bread, and her stories of yellow houses with red roofs on the Finish landscape. She had a very large impact on my life. I still have dreams about her home, and her stories are woven all through my paintings.
