A Dog and His Girl
oil on canvas (8×8)My childhood held only 3 dogs in it. Our neighbors had a big black short haired one, and we had a red dog we called “Rover”. My only memories of those two dogs are of them fighting….viciously and violently fighting. The adults around me always immediately stopped the fight because they said that neither dog would ever quit on its own. Our neighbor, Keith, was a dairy farmer and once had to throw a whole pail of milk on the dogs to get them apart. Consequently, I was afraid of dogs when I was very small.
Some time after we moved to town, my dad found an abandoned dog out at 3 mile corner. He brought her home, named her Lady, and she was ours for years. Lady LOVED my dad and was polite to my 2 sisters and myself. Even though Lady was always our Dad’s dog. She gave me a worth-while gift. She healed me of my fear.
