MY FAVORITE THINGS…. DAY 13

Go Ahead…Just Be Yourself

People ask me sometimes why I paint sheep.  I don’t really know.  I strongly dislike mutton and I also don’t like the taste of lamb.  There’s just something about it.  Maybe its because once I was coming down with the flu when lamb was being served.  Who knows the reasons for this kind of prejudice. But, I was around lambs a lot when I was a child. They were so cute and sweet. I got to feed them warm milk out of a pop bottle with a nipple attached.  There were 2 or 3 who considered themselves mine. They thought this 5 year old was their mother.

A more accurate reason for liking them, is that they are so delightfully ignorant.  I especially love things that make me laugh.  Sheep do exactly the opposite of what you might expect.  They run straight ahead of you on the road, instead of getting off.  They run up from the ditch to get in front of your car rather than hold to safety.  Of course, I identify with them somehow. OOOOhhh that is difficult for my poor pride to handle.  Still….True…True.

The first painting of sheep I did came from a trip to Carmel, California.  I had an art show there and we ate at Clint Eastwood’s restaurant.  Sitting in that beautiful place, having a drink, looking out at the ocean, and the lovely landscape, we saw the fattest sheep I have ever seen.  Those sheep were part of my inner landscape from that point on.  They were taken care of and totally content.  And that is where I got the idea to do the “Fabulously Wealthy” painting.  Feed the Children later produced a poster of it. After many, many more paintings of sheep, I still love painting them.  I still identify with them.  And there will likely be more….

  1. I love this one Dorsey! Your palette is so exciting. I really like your sheep. Kinda like goats or alpacas, both hilarious to me. Anyway, the sheep are comforting too, cuddly like Lambchop.
