THE MOON, THE STARS, THE EARTH AND ME

The Moon the stars the land and me by Dorsey McHugh
THE MOON, THE STARS, THE EARTH AND ME (8×8/oil on canvas)

The journey across the Atlantic was exhausting.  I am weary.  A few days ago, I walked past the location of the Boston bombing, which would occur in a week or so.  In my bags, I was dragging more stuff than I will ever use.  The weight of these bags is a metaphor for all the weight I have carried around since childhood.   I need to be lighter.  I need the wisdom to know what to leave behind.  Wisdom is won with pain and asking.  Now, I am lying under a pile of quilts, in a country I know very little about.  It is quiet.  More quiet than I have experienced since my childhood.  And the stars!  I stood outside for a while before coming in.  There are more stars than I have seen anywhere besides South Dakota.  I am isolated here.  Sealed off from the rest of the world. There is no internet or phone connection. I am alone with my own thoughts.  Ohhh, these thoughts!  They are unruly children running in and out!  When I try to engage them in some sort of conversation, they laugh at me, dance away, hide in the corners of the dark room.  That first night was a battle.  My real battle was with the temptation to run back to the old and familiar, though it was draining the life from me.  I have decided to live until I die.  So I watch these thoughts flit about like ping pong balls in a closed room.  I have time to wait them out.  This is how I drift off to sleep……alone with the moon, the stars, the earth and my thoughts.
